stacy andrews : STUFF I LIKE

Too often, and for too long, American “Christianity” has been a political agenda in search of a gospel useful enough to accommodate it. There is a liberation theology of the Left, and there is also a liberation theology of the Right, and both are at heart mammon worship. The liberation theology of the Left often wants a Barabbas, to fight off the oppressors as though our ultimate problem were the reign of Rome and not the reign of death. The liberation theology of the Right wants a golden calf, to represent religion and to remind us of all the economic security we had in Egypt. Both want a Caesar or a Pharaoh, not a Messiah.

I assumed Nick Drake was a current artist …

Nick Drake (1948 – 1974) … suffered from depression and insomnia throughout his life, and these topics were often reflected in his lyrics. Upon completion of his third album, 1972’s Pink Moon, he withdrew from both live performance and recording, retreating to his parents’ home in rural Warwickshire.  In1974, Drake died from an overdose of a prescribed antidepressant; he was 26 years old …

In 2000, Volkswagen featured the title track from Pink Moon in a television advertisement, and within a month Drake had sold more records than he had in the previous thirty years.

Jakob Dylan’s new album. I love this guy’s music … If you don’t know him, he is the lead singer of the Wallflowers (One Headlight), and Bob Dylan’s son. You can hear the similarities, but only slightly, in all the right ways.

Much has been made of the blazing sprint-speed of the cheetah, the prodigious leaps of the kangaroo, and underwater skills of the dolphin, and the gymnastic prowess of the chimpanzee. But the fact of the matter is that no animal can match the human in all-around athletic ability. If we were to hold a mammal decathlon (sprinting, endurance running, long jumping, high jumping, swimming, deep diving, gymnastics, striking, kicking, and burrowing) different animals would win each event, but … a human would easily win the best overall score.

This is a giant Obama head a block from our house … I love our neighborhood.
